Software to use for chat service

Is the issue listing it somewhere with allowing access to a such a closed platform, or the message that people might get from seeing it on an Aux website ?

If that’s the message, Perhaps it can simply be clarified so people don’t mistake a resource for an advertisement ? If one really wants to, showing a popup when clicking the link that says “that space is moderated and all but we don’t like the platform because: ${list-of-points}” would be pretty hard to miss and potentially solve the issue, I feel like.

(Note: I’m not really trying to propose a solution, more to understand your point, and my example was whipped up as I wrote it, feel free to disregard it)

I find Matrix UI (and the UX) extremely unwieldly, especially if you had previously committed to popular services like Skype, Teamspeak or Discord. However, I would like to avoid adding yet another layer of complexity by introducing a newer, less popular service (such as Zulip) for live communication. Matrix is one of the Discord alternatives, and it offers good privacy.

Addressing @austreelis’s concerns on Discord, I also would like to avoid interacting with Discord. It offers a much lower barrier of entry (unlike Matrix, which may be preferrable) and easily attracts the kind of behaviour that you do not want in your community.
(For reference I have been moderating the Hyprland Discord for little over a year now. It is an extreme moderation effort)

Perhaps it is better to hold a vote on this, but Matrix appears to me the correct mixture of familiarity and user experience. It may not be as friendly as the Discord client to the non-technically inclined, but it is not impossible to get used to.

Do I hear auxolotl on programming.dev?

Both of these are issues, I don’t feel we should be linking to it as it may direct people to this proprietary platform, but we should also not be sending a message that we endorse it. I don’t think a popup like that does very much here, as we are still soft endorsing it by listing it in the first place.

It’s also not “elitism” to say any platform straight doesn’t align with your values. It’s philosophically/morally consistent to prefer free software software & services for writing free software & services.

I saw this too. But do you mind expanding?

as much as discord admittedly isn’t great, the power of the network effect means that basically everyone is on there. I’m there because all my friends are there, it’s my main means of communication online. I think matrix with a discord bridge provides a good compromise of openness while still extending our reach to more ppl.

(also my first post :D)

Not really anything. I posted it because it’s nice info to have.

Many people being on there makes it, in my opinion, even more important to make a clear stance against it. Freedom is important.

We voted on this at the top of the topic, and matrix sans discord got a significant amount (double-by-eye) of matrix with discord bridging. Maybe this can be a thing to explore later, but for now there will not be a bridge

yeah it is more than double. I think what u suggest is most reasonable, create the matrix sans bridging but explore that option at a later date if the need arises. I should also probably get around to making a matrix account if not hosting my own instance.

I will give it one more day, and then reset the poll without discord bridging, since zulip could still win.

Please don’t do this.

The poll decided on matrix, together the matrix votes are over 60%, but just over 40% was for matrix+discourse with no bridge. The numbers aren’t close, there’s no realistic way that all of the discord+matrix voters would switch.

Even if there was a genuine possibility we asked the people and they have decided - I think we should respect this poll and look at how we could do something better for decision making next time. We’re looking for something fine not something perfect here.

I would be much more in-favor of calling the poll now and making a matrix server rather than resetting and telling the (76!) voters that we should do it all again.

I am going to put my vote down and agree with minion. We should close the poll now. It is unlikely we get any more answers on the poll.

And also the fact that matrix + discourse is broken into 2 different values makes it appear a lot more unclear that discourse + matrix is the clear winner. Even the combination of all "zulip"s is not even half that of matrix + discourse of some form

Not to mention that we really need a better place for more informal contact. And leaving it one more day is doing more harm then good.

The issue I have with this is that this poll serves two functions, what software + whether or not we should have discord support, which is why I put matrix because that’s the only way we have that. Since it’s not past 50%, we can’t have discord support. The thing is tho people who voted for that might not have voted matrix, but only did so because of discord, so it’s actually unclear whether its zulip or matrix for now. I know some people in the discussion liked zulip but ultimately wanted discord support more.

Going with @jakehamilton approach of “small steps we can take now” I feel the numbers are pointing to matrix as a favored platform. Settings this up should take a bit of time I assume.

Decisions about bridging and syncing with other platforms are IMO separate but not mutually exclusive (actually quite the opposite ) to the existence of a matrix chat.

This being the case there should’ve been 2 separate polls. One for main software, and another for discord support.

This is a valid point. But its also worth pointing out that they did not vote for zulip either.
