Post your computers!

here are a few of mine:
MainPC: Ryzen 5 5700X, GTX 1660, 16GB RAM
ThinkpadT420: Intel i5-2520M, 8GB RAM
Acer Xspire 1430 (AKA the shitbox): AMD E300 (two whole cores :pain:),4GB RAM

also a few RPis scattered around, none running Nix (yet)

Gaming Desktop:

Surface Pro 7, running Bazzite (currently unable to ssh into it to get neofetch)

Rock5, runs a few support servers for my NAS/Media server.

HomeAssistant running on an ODroid N2+

2 Hetzner servers. One for tools and such, the other as a cloud dev box to use temporarily while i sell my desktop and laptop. Runs VSCode server.

A NAS built of a Terra master 422 with 4x4TB HDD and 2x caching 1TB ssds running Unraid. Runs media servers, backups, etc

An old HP Mini 2140, that I am getting to put a SBC into so I can use the chassis with new specs.

I plan to sell the desktop and laptop for a Framework 16 w/ video card attachment.

Yeah, I’m a GNOMiE. Just a HP Dev One with 64GB of RAM that I legally acquired. Not ready to switch my main machine to Aux just yet, I want it to be stable since this is my main machine.

Also got a T430 but it’s not ready yet all the way.

My machines are named after California locales. Here’s the NAS, LosAngeles:

And the topmost of my stack of NUCs:

I’d neofetch my gaming desktop, SanFrancisco, but it runs Windows. I will pick @yulian’s and @angryant’s brains later about gaming on Linux.

And I’m too lazy to open my laptop (HalfMoonBay) to neofetch that, but it’s a ThinkPad X1 whose replacement with a Framework I have not been able to justify—yet.

Oh hey! I use gemstone names too! Good choice!!

I use gemstones for servers (amethyst, peridot, malachite, jasper, chalcedony, and citrine are currently in use).

For computers and devices, I use type of body if water + type of music. Seashanty (gaming desktop), oceanhymn (surface), riversong (work laptop, also a doctor who reference), boglied (my phone) are current ones.

The one exception is onyx-lake. Since it’s a server and dev machine in the cloud hybrid, it uses gemstone + type of body of water.

i currently have 3 hosts, all of which are using nix in some capacity

first, my main desktop telvanni running nixOS, which is my most up to date:

specs: ryzen 3 3100 + rx 6650 xt + ddr4 3200 16gb + 2tb nvme ssd, config at Liassica/nixos-config: My NixOS configuration - Codeberg.org

next, my acer c7 chromebook from 2013 hlaalu which is now running arch linux with nix on top, which i haven’t updated in a while:

specs: ancient intel celeron cpu + ddr3 6gb (upgraded; it came with 2!) + 16gb sdd (so cramped i had to use arch + nix instead of nixOS), config at Liassica/chronfig: Configuration for my Chromebook - Codeberg.org

finally, my 2016 acer aspire redoran which i haven’t updated in ages (so much so that it’s still using my old hostname scheme of greek gods (telvanni was demeter, hlaalu was chronos) which i then learned wasn’t original so i changed it), also on nixOS:

specs: intel i7-6500u + ddr4 2666 8gb + 500gb hdd (it came with a 1tb hdd which i then swapped for the 256gb ssd my desktop came with (prebuilt :agony:) but then i put that ssd back in my desktop to put windows on but i had given my 1tb hdd to my brother and so this 500gb is salvaged from one of my dad’s old laptops, the same one the chromebook’s ram is from), config in the same place as telvanni

neither of the laptops hold a charge anymore which is annoying; that’s one of the main reasons i don’t keep them up to date very much

as i mentioned, my old hostname scheme was based on greek gods. the current one is named after the three joinable Dunmer Great Houses in the game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, which is one of my favorite games of all time (playing through it with mods right now–Tamriel Rebuilt is probably one of the biggest and best mods for any game ever). however i might end up changing it to relate to bands i like (e.g. guardian, priest, and maiden; bonus points if you know all three of the bands i’m referring to) or something

Is this how you honor the Sixth House and the tribe unmourned? (Great naming convention )

Fun thread!

My machines are named after stars, specifically the traditional Arabic names that were ported into other cultures by the Almagest. I used to try and match the name’s literal meaning to purpose, and/or group related machines within constellations, but these days when I need a new name I scroll through the list until I find one that’s pretty distinct, easy to spell, and vibes with me.

They all currently run NixOS, with mostly public configurations (minus agenix credentials and git-crypted private bits).

Main desktop is vega, a very silly overkill machine that I overkilled so that I wouldn’t need to upgrade for many years. So far so good!

izar is off at the moment, but a basic T495 thinkpad, one of the first of the ryzen + vega graphics options. A common theme is that I stick with AMD graphics as much as possible after having one too many fights with nvidia drivers and their (lack of) integration with the linux desktop world.

orion isn’t within reach, but it’s izar’s replacement, a Framework 16 with the dGPU caboose.

rigel and canopus are work machines for my job, so they stay pretty boring. Rigel’s a system76 Thelio workstation, canopus is a 1st gen Framework 13.

Finally, a little family of servers. acrux is a rackmount NAS and “hyperconverged” server. It stores all the things, serves all the things, and runs whatever home services I need/want, including VMs when needed.

iris is the on-site backup NAS, pulling ZFS snapshots from acrux with zrepl. It’s also the one machine that is not a star name, I have no idea where it came from.

gacrux is the offsite backup, a zfs.rent VM (not affiliated, just a happy user). Runs my IRC bouncer, but mostly just receives encrypted snapshots via zrepl and keeps them safe. Zrepl is great for this since it supports replication of encrypted datasets such that the target doesn’t have any decryption keys, perfect for backup to a third party host.

I have a moderately ancient Acer desktop PC with several parts that weren’t there when I bought it. Its hostname is shelley when it’s booted into NixOS (technically started running AuxOS today) and walton when it’s running Haiku: both names connected to Frankenstein because the computer is a bit like that monster.

Most of my past computers have had birds for hostnames: my last laptop was “morpork” before half its parts gave up at about the same time.

water-themes yeah… Mine are named by surf/ watersport spots… aitutaki for my main machine, j-bay for my personal VPS. raspberrys are currently color-coded to match stickers on cables & monitors

Mainly a 11-year-old “trash can” Mac Pro
